Davenport (unposted; 4/1/07, p1) says sometimes people are mean and rude. It dismays me to no end that the N&R insists on 'balancing' my column with Davenport's. Is that what they think of me? That I can be 'balanced' by that lightweight?

Oh, dear. I never thought of it that way. I'm sorry, Ed. Let me know what I can do to make it better.

P.S. Of course, as you know, even though I'm 'The Editor,' I don't really have the power to do anything concrete like get rid of Davenport, but if we can talk about it and I can prostrate myself before you in public, I'd like that.

Davenport tells the story of a Lexus driver who shows disrespect to a funeral procession and then receives his comeuppance from the class-blind uniformed officers of the Greensboro police department. Davenport uses this story to make the following point: The wealthier one is, the more likely one is to be self-centered and inconsiderate it.

What nonsense! Not a single wealthy person I know -- myself included -- would be caught dead in a Lexus. Davenport is mocking the lower middle class with his preposterous fable.

If we were to amend CAFE standards so that everyone had to drive the same $15,000 car, then none of this would have happened and everyone would have been nice to each other. Of course, you'd have had to strap the casket to the roof, but that's neither here nor there.

There's a well known liberal bumper sticker, with which you may or may not be familiar, that reads, 'Mean People Suck.' How do you, archliberal little Eddie Cone of the archliberal Cone family, reconcile this liberal disdain of mean people with your hostility toward great American Charles Davenport who is making the same point, but in a much more eloquent and spirited manner which you as a 'professional journalist' find threatening and intimidating?

Let me start by saying that I'm a senior citizen. What I mean by bringing this up (and believe me, I'll bring it up again and again) is that I can say whatever crazy-ass thing I want to and make up all sorts of conspiracies involving the Simkins PAC (Simpkins? I get so confused.) and if you call me on it, I'll accuse you of picking on a little old lady who marched with Dr. King at Selma and rode the bus with Rosa Parks.

Anyway, what I was about to say... what I was about to say...I forgot. I'll be back. BB

Exactly.
